Military Universities and Schools
Military universities have a long tradition in American education. These selective universities offer excellent education and training for jobs in the military and beyond. There are five United States Service Academies and a number of senior military colleges that are subsidized by the states. Many of these universities offer free tuition in exchange for military service either in the US Armed Forces or in the various state militia.
The Army, Navy, Air Force and the Coast Guard all have their own service academies; Marines typically attend the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. With the exception of the Coast Guard Academy, all of these schools require appointment for admission.
Other military universities are located throughout the United States. The United States Merchant Marine Academy trains men and women for careers in the merchant marines. Two of the most notable state military universities are the Citadel in Charleston, SC and Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA.
