Diversity

The United States Merchant Marine Academy prides itself in having a diverse student body, from forty two different states and territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam, and from Panama and Malaysia. Of all the students, women make up more than 14 percent and more than 16 percent of the class are from ethnic minority groups. Having a diverse student population offers a unique opportunity to learn from people from different backgrounds.

Admission

Getting into the school is quite challenging, but it enables you to have an exceptionally rewarding experience in the long-run. The class consists of highly intelligent, high-performing students. This year's class boasts the highest mean SAT scores of any previous class, with 596 in critical reading and 635 in math.

Program

USMMA offers a unique program that is guaranteed to prepare you for a variety of options after graduation. By the end of it, you earn a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a Coast Guard license as a Third-Mate or Third-Assistant Engineer and a commission in the Navy reserve or an active-duty commission to any of the five branches of the military. As part of the degree, sophomores and juniors spend 300-360 days out on the water sailing to qualify for the Coast Guard license.
